Pallet rack cross bars – steel pallet support bars for step beams
Increase warehouse safety and protect your inventory. Dwixt pallet rack cross bars (also called pallet supports, pallet rack support bars or safety bars) are 16-gauge galvanized steel crossbars that drop in between your rack beams. They stop pallets from falling through, tie the beams together to cut deflection and spread, and give forklift operators a solid target when loading at height. For palletized loads they do the job of wire decking at about a third of the cost per pallet position.

Three styles – which one do you need?
Double Flanged – lays on top of the beams with flanges that wrap over the beam face. Helps reduce beam spread and locks position. Best all-around choice.
Hat Style – flush-fit design sits inside the step beam, keeping the beam face clear for barcode labels and SKU numbers. Most cost-effective; ideal for pick-and-pack. Tek screw installation recommended.
Structural – heavy-duty 1/4″-thick welded cuff design for structural (box) beams. Powder coat finish standard.
Sizes are named by the rack they fit
Order by rack frame depth: the 42″ cross bar is for a 42″ deep rack, the 48″ for a 48″ deep rack. The bar itself is made shorter than the frame – roughly 3-5/8″ less – so it spans between the beams and seats in the 1-5/8″ step. Measure your upright frame depth (front to back) and order that size; there is nothing to subtract.

All bars are 2″ wide. Capacity is per bar, uniformly distributed – two bars under a pallet carry up to twice the figure. Cross bars never add to the rack's own rating: stay under the beam capacity too.
How many do I need?
Use 2 cross bars per pallet position, spaced evenly front to back. Heavy or weak pallets may call for 3 per position.

Universal compatibility
Fits standard 1-5/8″ step beams used in teardrop and selective pallet rack. Compatible with step beam tops measuring 1-5/16″ to 1-3/4″, which covers virtually all major rack manufacturers – Interlake, Mecalux, Husky, Ridg-U-Rak and more. Not sure? Cross bars or wire decking?
If you store pallets only, cross bars are the economical answer: two bars per position instead of a full deck, roughly a third of the cost, and they ship in a fraction of the space. If you hand-stack cartons, small parts or anything that needs a surface, use wire decking or punched steel decking instead. Many warehouses run both – bars on pallet levels, decking on pick levels. What are pallet rack cross bars for?
They give a pallet something to sit on besides the two beams. Without support, a weak, undersized or broken pallet can drop between the beams; with two cross bars under it, the load is carried across the bay. They also tie the front and rear beams together, which reduces beam spread, and they leave the level open for airflow and sprinkler coverage.
How many cross bars do I need per pallet?
Two per pallet position, spaced evenly front to back – so a 96 in. beam level holding two pallets needs four bars, and a 144 in. level holding three pallets needs six. Use three per position for heavy loads or poor-quality pallets.
Which size do I order for my rack?
Order by upright frame depth. A 42 in. deep rack takes the 42 in. cross bar, a 48 in. deep rack takes the 48 in. bar. The bar is made about 3-5/8 in. shorter than the frame so it spans between the beams and seats in the step – you do not need to subtract anything yourself.
Double flanged or hat style – which should I choose?
Double flanged is the all-around choice: its flanges wrap over the beam face, so it locks in position and helps keep the beams from spreading, with no fasteners needed. Hat style sits inside the step, flush with the beam top, which keeps the beam face clear for labels and makes it the lowest-cost option – but it should be tek-screwed in place. If your beams are structural box beams with no step, use the structural style with welded cuffs.
Do cross bars replace wire decking?
For palletized loads, yes – two bars carry the pallet at about a third of the cost of a wire deck. They do not give you a surface, so for hand-stacked cartons, small parts or anything that could fall between bars, choose wire or punched steel decking instead.
Do I need tek screws?
Double flanged bars drop in and stay put under load; the pre-drilled holes let you screw them down if your operation or inspector wants them fixed. Hat style bars sit in the step without flanges, so we recommend tek screws for those. Screws are not included.
Will they fit my beams?
If you have roll-formed step beams with a top surface between 1-5/16 in. and 1-3/4 in. wide – the standard on teardrop and selective rack from all major manufacturers – yes. Measure the flat top of the beam to check. Structural box beams take the structural style.
