Dwixt punched steel decking is a 20-gauge galvanized steel panel with a 50% open punched surface that drops into standard 1-5/8″ step beams with no tools. The open area lets overhead sprinklers reach every rack level, which is how it meets the intent of NFPA 13 for open-rack storage, while the flat top carries hand-stacked cartons, small parts and irregular items that would snag on or fall through wire mesh. Every size below is named by the rack frame depth and the panel width, because that is how you will order it: a 42″ deep deck fits a 42″ deep frame. The panel itself is cut shorter than the frame – 3-5/8″ less in depth, and 1/2″ to 5/8″ less in width – so it drops down inside the beam steps and sits flush. A 42″ × 24″ deck, for example, measures 38-3/8″ × 23-1/2″. You do not need to measure the space between the steps; measure your upright frame depth and your beam length, and pick from the table.

Capacity is per panel, uniformly distributed. Deeper racks span further between beams, so the per-panel rating falls as depth grows – that is physics, not a lighter panel. Decking never adds to the rack's own capacity: stay under the beam rating and the deck rating.

Does punched steel decking meet NFPA 13?
It is built to. NFPA 13 and most insurers require open shelving surfaces in sprinklered rack storage so water can reach lower levels; solid shelves block it. This decking is 50% open, which is the threshold most authorities use for open-rack storage. Final acceptance always rests with your fire marshal or insurer (the authority having jurisdiction), so confirm with them for your occupancy.
Which size do I order for my rack?
Order by rack frame depth and panel width. Measure the depth of your upright frame (24, 36, 42 or 48 in.) and the length of your beam, then use the panels-per-level table above: a 96 in. beam takes four 24 in. panels, a 108 in. beam takes two 24 in. plus two 30 in. The panel is cut about 3-5/8 in. shorter than the frame so it drops inside the beam steps – you do not need to subtract anything yourself.
Punched steel or wire mesh decking – which should I use?
Wire mesh is the economical choice for palletized loads. Punched steel is the choice when you hand-stack cartons, small parts or irregular items: the flat surface will not snag or tear packaging, small pieces cannot fall through, and it carries more weight without deflecting. Both keep the open area sprinklers need. If you store pallets only, wire decking costs less; if people pick from the shelf, punched steel earns its price.
Does punched decking increase my pallet rack's capacity?
No. The rack's capacity is set by its beams and frames. Decking spreads the load across the beams and gives you a surface to stack on; it carries its own per-panel rating, listed in the table, and you must stay under both numbers.
What beams does it fit?
Standard 1-5/8 in. step beams – the roll-formed beams in teardrop and most selective pallet rack. The panel rests in the step, flush with the top of the beam, so the beam face stays clear for labels. Structural channel or box beams without a step need a flared or waterfall wire deck instead.
How is it installed?
Drop it in. Each panel sits down inside the beam steps under its own weight; there are no clips, tek screws or tools. Installing a full level takes minutes, and panels lift out just as easily if you re-slot the beams.
Is it galvanized?
Yes. Every panel is 20-gauge galvanized steel, which resists corrosion in normal warehouse use and stays clean under hand-stacked product. The gray galvanized finish also reflects light better than a painted deck, which helps in picking areas.
