Seismic pallet rack column guard – 12 in column protector with a 5.75 in opening for enlarged footplates

Made for rack with the big base plates. Pallet rack installed in California and other seismic zones usually carries enlarged footplates that a standard column protector will not fit over. This seismic column guard has a 5.75 in clear opening, so it drops around an upright with a footplate up to 5 in wide and bolts to the floor in front of it. Same job as our standard guard: 12 in of 3/16 in steel between the forklift and the upright. The four concrete wedge anchors are included.

Also called: seismic column protector, seismic post protector, wide-opening column guard, column guard for enlarged footplates, California rack post protector. If you have been searching under any of those names, this is the product.

How it works

  • 5.75 in clear opening fits enlarged seismic footplates up to 5 in wide; a standard guard fits footplates up to 3¾ in
  • 12 in tall, protecting the base of the upright where most forklift damage happens
  • 3/16 in thick steel, all-welded, safety-yellow powder coat
  • Four anchor holes; four ½ in concrete wedge anchors ship with the guard

Standard or seismic

Measure the width of the rack footplate. Up to 3¾ in, use the standard pallet rack column protectors in 12, 18 or 24 in heights. Over that, up to 5 in, use this seismic guard. For low first-beam levels in reach-truck aisles see the 4 in V-nose post protectors, and for the ends of rows the end of aisle rack protectors. Other openings and heights are available on request. Frequently asked questions

What is an enlarged seismic footplate?

Rack in seismic zones is anchored with a wider base plate under each upright to resist overturning. Those plates are commonly 4 to 5 in wide, too wide for a standard column guard's opening, which is why this guard has a 5.75 in opening.

Are the anchors included?

Yes. Four ½ in concrete wedge anchors ship with each guard, one for each hole in the footplate.

Will it fit a 3 in upright with a standard footplate?

It will fit, but with more clearance than it needs. If the footplate is 3¾ in or narrower, the standard column protector is the tighter and cheaper fit.

Do I need to remove the rack footplate or anchors?

No. The guard is shaped to sit around the upright and its footplate and anchors to the floor on its own plate.

How many do I need?

One per upright you want to protect. Most facilities start with the uprights facing the main aisles and the row ends.

Column Protection for Enlarged Seismic Footplates

Standard pallet rack column guards are designed for standard 3 to 3.75 in. wide footplates — they will not fit racks with enlarged seismic footplates commonly required in California and other seismic zones. This 12 in. floor-mount column guard has a wider 5.75 in. clear opening specifically engineered to fit around enlarged seismic footplates up to 5 in. wide.

Key Features

  • 5.75 in. clear interior width — fits enlarged seismic footplates up to 5 in. wide

  • 12 in. height — protects the bottom of the upright where most forklift damage occurs

  • 3/16 in. thick steel, all-welded construction High-visibility safety yellow powder coat finish

  • Floor-mounted with four anchor bolt holes (four ½ in. wedge anchors included)

Important

This guard is designed specifically for enlarged seismic footplates.

If your rack has standard-width footplates (3 to 3.75 in.), use our standard Pallet Rack Column Protectors instead.
