Nestable, rackable and stackable describe how a plastic pallet is used, not how strong it is. Pick the wrong one and you either pay for structure you never use, or put a pallet with no rack rating across a pair of beams. This guide explains the three ratings on every pallet spec sheet, what each type is built for, and which of our pallets fits each job.
The three ratings first
Every plastic pallet we sell lists up to three capacities. They are not interchangeable.
- Dynamic capacity is the load the pallet carries on forks or a pallet jack, in motion. This is the number that matters for most shipping.
- Static capacity is the load it holds sitting still on a flat, solid floor. It is always the highest of the three, because the floor supports the whole deck.
- Rack capacity is the load it carries across rack beams with nothing underneath the middle. It is always the lowest, and it is the only number that counts once the pallet leaves the floor.
The rule that follows: a pallet with no published rack rating does not go in a rack, whatever its static number says. A 30,000 lb static pallet can still be unsafe across beams, because an unsupported span loads the pallet in a completely different way. Our 48x40 rackable 6-runner shows the gap: 5,000 lb dynamic, 25,000 lb static, and 1,000 lb in a rack unreinforced.
Nestable pallets: ship it, don't bring it back
A nestable pallet has a hollow underside, so an empty pallet drops inside the one below it. That is the whole point. Seventy of our 48x40 nestable export pallets take up one pallet position instead of seventy, which is why a 53′ trailer carries 2,100 of them and why the per-pallet freight is so low. Each one weighs 17 lb, carries 2,200 lb in transit and 5,000 lb static, and is exempt from ISPM-15, so it crosses borders with no heat treatment, fumigation or stamp.
What a nestable pallet gives up is racking. The export pallet is not rack rated, and it is not meant to be. It is built for one-way shipments, export loads, and distribution where the pallet is not coming back.
Three variations on the idea:
- 45x45 nestable – the square footprint for four-drum loads: 2,000 lb dynamic, 8,000 lb static, 21 lb, 70 per stack.
- 48x40 3-runner nestable – three full-length runners give pallet jack entry from either 40″ end, for pallets that come back: 2,000 lb dynamic, 5,000 lb static, 24 lb, 17 per stack.
- 48x40 solid deck FlatDeck – a closed top deck so bags, small parts and loose cartons stay put: 2,800 lb dynamic, 15,000 lb static, a 500 lb rack rating, and a choice of flat-pack (50 per stack) or assembled (19 per stack).
Rackable pallets: a published number across the beams
A rackable pallet has full-length runners under the deck and a rack rating printed on the spec sheet. Most of ours take steel reinforcement rods that slide into the runners and raise that rating; the no-rod version is the floor version of the same pallet.
- 48x40 rackable 6-runner – the one that goes in the beams: 1,000 lb rack rating unreinforced, up to 3,000 lb with five steel rods, 5,000 lb dynamic, 25,000 lb static, 54 lb.
- 48x40 mid duty 6-runner – a genuine 800 lb rack rating at mid duty weight: 5,000 lb dynamic, 15,000 lb static, 42 lb, with none, 3, 5 or 10 rods.
- 37x37 compact rackable – about 30% less floor than a 48x40 with a 1,200 lb rack rating, higher than our full-size 48x40: 5,000 lb dynamic, 25,000 lb static, 46 lb.
- 37x32 compact rackable and 40x32 half pallet – 1,000 lb rack rated, 5,000 lb dynamic, 30,000 lb static, 36 lb each.
Rack ratings are published for a load spread evenly across the deck. A concentrated load, or beams set wider than the pallet's runners, changes the picture, so match the rating to how your rack is actually set up.
Stackable and heavy duty pallets: strength on the floor, not in the rack
A stackable pallet is built for block stacking and heavy floor loads. The static number is the headline, the dynamic number is still full forklift duty, and there is no rack rating because nothing ever goes across beams. The weight savings of a nestable are gone, but so is the flex.
- 48x40 heavy duty 5-runner – 5,000 lb dynamic, 30,000 lb static, 45.5 lb, with or without 3 steel rods.
- 48x40 double-face dual deck – a full top and a full bottom deck, 5,000 lb dynamic, 30,000 lb static, 61 lb. The bottom deck is the choice when pallets ride a conveyor or stack deck on deck.
- 48x48 heavy duty – a true 48″ square so wide loads stay inside the footprint: 5,000 lb dynamic, 20,000 lb static, 65 lb.
- 1200x1100 mm export – the metric export standard: 5,000 lb dynamic, 30,000 lb static, 65.5 lb.
- 48x40 mid duty 3-runner – structural plastic without the weight of a six-runner pallet, for operations that move everything by jack and never rack: 4,000 lb dynamic, 12,000 lb static, 42 lb.
Purpose-built pallets
Some loads need a footprint or a feature a general-purpose pallet does not have.
- 48x45 drum pallet – sized for four 55-gallon drums with no overhang, three lip options (flat, 1″ partial, 1″ full perimeter), 3,000 lb dynamic, 20,000 lb static.
- 48x40 IBC tote pallet – a molded valve channel for discharge without lifting the tote, sized for 275 and 330 gallon totes, 4,000 lb dynamic, 15,000 lb static.
- 44x30 keg pallet – a half-barrel footprint with an open slatted deck, 4,000 lb dynamic, 30,000 lb static.
- 48x45 automotive pallet – seatbelt restraints anchored into the pallet, in two- or four-belt configurations, 5,000 lb dynamic, 20,000 lb static.
- 56x44 beverage and glass pallet – seven full-length runners and an optional 28-grommet deck for grip, 2,500 lb dynamic, 15,000 lb static.
A quick decision guide
- The pallet ships once and does not come back (export, one-way distribution): the 48x40 nestable export pallet, or the 45x45 nestable for drums.
- The pallet comes back, but never goes in a rack: the 3-runner nestable or the mid duty 3-runner.
- The pallet goes across rack beams: the 48x40 rackable 6-runner, with rods if the load is over 1,000 lb, or the mid duty 6-runner for lighter racked loads.
- Heavy floor loads and block stacking: the heavy duty 5-runner, or the dual deck if pallets stack deck on deck or ride a conveyor.
- Drums, totes, kegs, parts or cases: one of the purpose-built pallets above.
What every pallet we sell has in common
All of them are injection molded in the USA from 100% recycled polyethylene, exempt from ISPM-15, and black. All of them ship LTL, and freight is where the type matters a second time: 70 nestable export pallets fill one pallet position, while 17 of the 3-runner nestables or a single stack of rackable pallets fill the same space. Send us the quantity and ZIP code and we will quote the order delivered, and if you are not sure which type you need, tell us the load, the footprint and how it will be handled.
